THE DIVERSITY OF GEORGIAN LOCAL AGRICULTURAL ANIMALS

L. А. Tortladze

Abstract

Animal husbandry is the most ancient traditional branch in Georgia. It’s not accidental that we have all kinds of agricultural animals and  birds, bred for many centuries as a result of national selection throughout, such as: the Georgian Mountain and Red cows, Tushetian and Imeretian  sheep, Kakhetian and Svanetian pigs, Tushetian and Megrelian  horses, the Georgian  buffalo, the Georgian bee and the sheep-dog, different kinds of  bird. Disappearance of local breeds will be an irreplaceable loss for the world gene pool, as these breeds possess such properties which are not characteristic of other cultural breeds. Georgia  are still preserves the richest genetic resources of different kinds of animals and birds representing  invaluable material for  perfection and selection of cultural breeds.
